Past Projects

Our Past Projects showcase the breadth of the Don Dunstan Foundation’s work over the years. It highlights diverse initiatives and collaborations that have driven positive social change, tackled complex policy challenges, and built a stronger, fairer community, reflecting our enduring commitment to Don Dunstan’s legacy.

Zero Project

The Don Dunstan Foundation initiated the nation-leading Adelaide Zero Project and played a vital role in highlighting the issue of homelessness in our community.

The Foundation’s work helped to embed significant innovation in the homelessness sector and among project partners.

With this strong foundation in place, the project has transitioned to a new community-led structure.

Migration

The Don Dunstan Foundation’s migration focus centres on leveraging high-quality research to inform public conversation about policy and service delivery for housing Australians. Building on past successes like the Migration Update Conference, the Foundation now supports the establishment of two key networks: the Migration and Refugee Research Network (MARRNet) and a Migration and Population Growth Network with the Committee for Adelaide.

MARRNet, inspired by Glasgow’s GRAMNet, is a dynamic collaboration of over 50 researchers from all three South Australian public universities, alongside government representatives and over 40 service provider organizations. Its core aim is to foster interdisciplinary research, innovation, and collaboration that directly impacts policy and practice in the migration space.

The network seeks to engage in needs-focused research that raises awareness, challenges assumptions, and promotes cohesive societies where diversity is valued. MARRNet works to improve settlement outcomes for asylum seekers, refugees, and other migrants, including international students, by facilitating research translation and knowledge exchange. Ultimately, it aims to build the profile of Australian and South Australian research in migration, providing a collective voice on key political questions grounded in social justice and human rights.

Len King Scholarship

Social justice and the law were issues of great principle for the late former Chief Justice of South Australia, The Hon Len King AC QC (1925-2011).

A man of dedication and vision, Mr King made significant contributions to the community in South Australia throughout his long and distinguished career as South Australian Attorney General, Minister for Community Welfare, Consumer Affairs and Aboriginal Affairs and as seventh Chief Justice of South Australia.

It was for this reason that the King family entrusted a portion of their father’s estate to the Don Dunstan Foundation to establish a scholarship dedicated to promoting leadership in social justice and the law. The prestigious Dunstan Foundation Len King Scholarship assists high-achieving students who, for financial reasons, would not otherwise be able to attend university to fulfill their dream of studying law.

In conjunction with our partner organisations, The University of Adelaide and Flinders University, we offer this opportunity for candidates who demonstrate academic excellence to pursue a career in law. This project has been made possible through the invaluable guidance and support of the Wyatt Trust.

AdMental

AdMental is an entertaining event harnessing the power of marketing and advertising to help achieve our state’s objective of becoming the State of Wellbeing.

Inspired by ‘The Pitch’ segment on the television show The Gruen Transfer, two emerging creatives are mentored by advertising agencies and tasked with creating an advertisement to promote mental health. The advertisements are shown to the audience and our expert judging panel who select a winner.
