The House of History: Shared Opportunities by Dato’ Dr Ooi Kee Beng

House of History, Ayers House, part of the 2025 History Festival

The Don Dunstan Foundation was proud to support a lecture about the opportunities presented by the shared history of Penang, Malaysia, and Adelaide.

Dato Dr Ooi Kee Beng, Executive Director of the Penang Institute, was also joined by Dr Jane Lomax-Smith, Lord Mayor and chairperson of the Don Dunstan Foundation.

In 1973, Premier Don Dunstan suggested the council consider a sister city relationship between Adelaide and Penang’s capital George Town.  It was a natural connection – George Town was founded in 1786 by Captain Francis Light. 50 years later Adelaide was founded by his son, Colonel William Light.

Listen to the event above as Dato Dr Ooi Kee Beng, a skilled historian and thinker, explored these connections.
