Foundation’s new priorities revealed

The Don Dunstan Foundation has released a new strategic plan, with climate justice and Indigenous rights among the focus areas.

As we mark the 25th anniversary of the Don Dunstan Foundation, we are excited to introduce our new strategic plan — a roadmap that will guide us into the future, building on Don’s vision of a just and equitable society.

Our Guiding Principles

Don drafted the principles that still guide the Foundation – social and economic equity; democratic and inclusive forms of governance; respect for and protection of the rights of Indigenous people; and the appropriate use of government interventions to secure socially just outcomes.

Don wanted us to value cultural and ethnic diversity; to support the capacity of individuals to control their own lives; to work for the remediation of global mal-distribution of wealth and income.

Our Focus Areas

While Don’s example continues to inspire us today, he wouldn’t want us to engage in hollow nostalgia.

That’s why we will tackle head-on the big social justice issues of the day through research, education, and the development of policy and program ideas.

The Foundation has settled on five focus areas which will define our work in the coming years:

  • Climate Justice: We will tackle the impacts of climate change on vulnerable people, working with researchers and policymakers to find effective solutions.
  • Aboriginal Empowerment: We will continue to support the rights of First Nations’ peoples, including to self-determination and recognition of their unique place in this country.
  • Housing and Homelessness: We will advocate for affordable and appropriate housing and support initiatives to end homelessness.
  • Dunstan Legacy: We will celebrate Don Dunstan’s legacy and communicate that to a new generation.
  • Arts and Civil Society: We will support the arts and seek to foster a dynamic and engaged civil society.

How We’ll Work

Over the coming months, we’ll be developing projects in all of these focus areas.

Among other things, we will amplify research and evidence to a broad audience to influence public policy and promote critical thinking. We will support alternative and multiple perspectives to address issues.
